Ramayan Makes History: First Indian Film 'Filmed for IMAX' and First Released in ScreenX

A New Benchmark for Indian Cinema Exhibition

Ramayan is breaking ground in how audiences will experience the film in theatres. It is the first Indian film to receive IMAX's "Filmed for IMAX" certification — a designation previously reserved for Hollywood productions from directors like Christopher Nolan, Denis Villeneuve, and James Cameron.

What 'Filmed for IMAX' Means

The "Filmed for IMAX" label means portions of Ramayan were shot using IMAX-certified cameras and formatted specifically for the IMAX aspect ratio — giving audiences up to 26% more picture in IMAX theatres compared to standard screenings. This is significant for the VFX-heavy spectacle sequences involving Lanka, the Rama Setu bridge, Hanuman's flight, and the battle scenes.

ScreenX: First Indian Film Worldwide

Ramayan will also be the first Indian film released in ScreenX format worldwide. ScreenX is a panoramic cinema format that extends the screen to the left and right walls of the theatre, creating a 270-degree immersive viewing experience. For a film built around massive environments — from the forests of Dandakaranya to the shimmering city of Lanka — the ScreenX format adds a genuine dimension of immersion.

4DX Presentations

International markets will also get 4DX presentations of Ramayan — meaning motion seats, wind, mist, and environmental effects synchronised with the on-screen action. Combined with the DNEG VFX and the Zimmer-Rahman score, the 4DX experience is positioned as the most immersive way to watch the film outside IMAX.

50,000+ International Screens

Sony Pictures Entertainment is rolling out Ramayan across 50,000+ screens in international markets starting November 6, 2026 — two days before the India release on November 8. This makes it the widest international release for any Indian film by a significant margin.
