The Numbers Behind India's Costliest Film

Nitesh Tiwari's Ramayan holds the record for the most expensive Indian film ever produced — and ranks among the costliest film projects globally. Producer Namit Malhotra has publicly referenced a combined budget of approximately ₹4,000 crore ($500 million) for the two-part saga, a figure confirmed by IndieWire, Variety, and The Hollywood Reporter.

Part 1 alone carries an estimated production cost near ₹835 crore ($100 million), according to industry trade reports. For context, RRR cost approximately ₹550 crore, and Kalki 2898 AD reportedly came in around ₹600 crore. Ramayan dwarfs both.

Where Did the Money Go?

The bulk of the budget has gone into visual effects and world-building. DNEG — the eight-time Oscar-winning VFX house behind Interstellar, Dune, Blade Runner 2049, and Ex Machina — is the primary VFX vendor. Over 1,200 VFX artists have been working across multiple studios to build ancient Ayodhya, the golden towers of Lanka, Ravana's ten-headed form, Hanuman's supernatural sequences, the Rama Setu bridge, and large-scale battle scenes.

The cast salaries, production design (including massive physical sets in Mumbai), location shoots across Ayodhya, Rajasthan and Sri Lanka, and the combined fees of composers Hans Zimmer and A.R. Rahman account for the remaining significant portion.

The $500 Million Figure — P&A Included

The $500 million figure reported by IndieWire and Yahoo Entertainment encompasses the full two-part production plus prints and advertising (P&A) spend. The pure production cost for both films is lower, but the worldwide marketing campaign through Sony Pictures — covering 50,000+ international screens across 37+ countries — adds substantially to the total investment.

Box Office Expectations

With a production cost of this magnitude, Ramayan needs a historic theatrical performance. Trade analysts estimate Part 1 needs to gross approximately ₹1,800-2,000 crore worldwide to be considered a clean commercial hit. The Diwali release window, 50,000+ international screens, IMAX and ScreenX formats, and the trailer crossing 1 billion views all point toward a viable path to those numbers.
