Ranbir Kapoor has confirmed in interviews that he will play two roles in Nitesh Tiwari's Ramayana: Lord Ram — the film's protagonist — and Lord Parashurama, the sixth avatar of Vishnu who famously clashes with Ram in a pivotal early scene in the epic.

This is not a rumour or a fan theory. Ranbir has spoken about it directly: two avatars of Vishnu, played by the same actor, meeting in the same film. It is one of the most conceptually fascinating casting decisions in recent Indian cinema.

Parashurama is the sixth avatar of Vishnu — the warrior brahmin who cleansed the earth of corrupt Kshatriyas twenty-one times. He is one of the most fearsome figures in Hindu mythology: wielding an axe gifted by Shiva, possessing the power of immortality (he is a chiranjivi), and known for his uncompromising, fierce temperament.

In the Ramayana, Parashurama appears after Ram breaks Shiva's bow (Pinaka) during the Swayamvar in Mithila — the event that wins him Sita as his bride. Parashurama arrives furious at the bow's destruction, confronts Ram, and challenges him. What follows is one of the most charged confrontations in the epic — the seventh avatar of Vishnu (Ram) meeting the sixth (Parashurama). Ram, with characteristic calm and humility, eventually receives Parashurama's blessings.

Ram demanded stillness, grace, and an inner peace that radiates outward — 18 months of meditation, archery training, and a complete lifestyle change. Parashurama, by contrast, demands fury, authority, and the energy of a warrior who has lived centuries of righteous anger.

"They are the same soul but completely different expressions," Ranbir has said. "When I am Parashurama, I cannot think like Ram. When I am Ram, the calmness has to be total."

The closest precedent might be Mohanlal's work in certain mythological productions in Malayalam cinema — but even that does not match the scale or conceptual ambition of what Ranbir is doing in Ramayana.
